Turning food waste into feed and fertilizer

(August 2024) A young tech leader named Swan has been recognized for developing a solution that converts food waste into biomass that can be fed to chicken, fish, and other animals raised for commercial use. 

“Food waste is a world issue, says Ni Putu Mas Swandewi, also known as Swan, told Huawei Editor-in-Chief Gavin Allen. 

The Generation Connect Young Leadership Fellow that, although biomass conversion is used at scale in her native Indonesia, technology doesn’t play the role it could. 

Swan invented a solution that makes use of the latest digital platforms. “I designed it with the IoT so we can monitor the process,” she said. 

Right now, 73% of Indonesia’s food waste ends up in landfills. Swan hopes that by working with Huawei, she can her enhance her technical skills and make further progress in solving this problem.
